秩父札所とは秩父市内各所（34ヶ所）に点在する観世音菩薩（観音）を祀ったお寺のことです。もともと札所はその名のとおり、巡礼の証として、また様々な思い、願い事を込めてお堂に木札を打ちつけ、納める場所でありました。しかし現在、木札は紙の札に代わり納めるようになりました。秩父札所が創設されたのは室町時代ですが、初期の頃の巡礼者は修行僧や武士が中心でした。後に庶民にも札所巡りが広がり始めブームとなり、札所巡礼は江戸時代に最盛期を迎えました。江戸に近かったことも理由の一つでしょうが、秩父札所は江戸市民に絶大な信仰があったと言われています。
